WELCOME TO PORTOROZ

This year we are facing the hundredth anniversary of discovery of ionizing radiation. In December 1895 W.Röntgen made his first exciting experiments with an X-ray machine. The use of ionizing radiation grew enormously since then. A system of radiological protection has developed over many decades as the effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiations have been better understood.

To promote the knowledge and experience in this field extensive cooperation within European Associations for Radiation Protection has been established. Joint congresses and symposia have been organized to exchange scientific information and experience between different countries. Continuing these efforts this will be the 1995 Symposium on Radiation Protection in Neighbouring Countries in Central Europe following Obergurgl in 1993. IRPA kindly granted the IRPA Regional Congress status to it.

After reviewing, the Programme Committee has accepted 149 papers from 15 countries and three international organizations which is much more than originally expected. Due to time constraints 83 papers will be presented as posters and the rest as oral presentations. Four invited and two special guest presentations which will cover key areas of the Symposium are included in the programme. The working schedule will be intensive nevertheless there will be sufficient opportunities for social activities in the Mediterranean environment of Portoroz.

Portoroz is situated on the Adriatic coast, on the sunny side of the Alps, hidden in the green vegetation and among roses. That's where its name comes from - the rose port. For a century and over, Portoroz has been living a rich and varied life. Today Portoroz is a modern tourist spot with a well equipped beach, a modern marine and numerous bathing-pools, sports and recreation grounds.

The green Mediterranean environment with the see-food and the smoked ham (see recipes) and wine simply cannot be resisted. So you are cordially invited to join us in Portoroz. Come and meet old and make new friends.

[PODPIS] Rafael Martincic, President of Radiation Protection Association of Slovenia

P.S.
The Symposium took place in Hotel Bernardin in Portoroz, Sepember 4-8, 1995.

PRESENTATIONS

Oral presentations

For oral presentations (10 minutes talk and 5 minutes discussion) an overhead and slide projectors will be available.

Posters

A panel 95 cm wide x 110 cm high will be available for each poster. Materials for attaching posters will be provided at the symposium site. Posters should be attached till 09 h 00, Tuesday, September 5, 1995.

Authors of posters are kindly asked to remove their posters on Friday, September 8, 1995.

Poster presentations

Authors will be given a possibility to highlight the most important points in their papers during mini presentations of posters at the appropriate sessions. Each poster contribution will have 3 minutes oral presentation with up to 3 overhead transparencies (no slides).

SUBMISSION AND FORM OF FINAL PAPERS

The deadline for submission of final papers to be published in the proceedings of the symposium is Thursday, September 7, 1995. Only papers presented orally or displayed as posters will be included in the proceedings. No corrections or changes can be made after the submission. The papers should be submitted in a written form and on a diskette (Word Perfect, Word, ASCII). The paper size is A4, font size 12 points, line spacing 1 and maximum 4 pages (including tables and figures). The title of the paper should be typed in capitals, centred at the top of the page, followed by the authors' names, institutional affiliations and postal addresses.

Original figures and tables should also be submitted separately.

TECHNICAL EXHIBITION

Concurrent with the scientific sessions, a technical exhibition will take place at the symposium venue.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

Welcome reception

All participants are cordially invited to meet old and make new friends at the welcome party held at Grand Cafe Emona, Monday, September 4, 1995 at 20 h 00.

Organ concert

An organ concert in the new Parish church of Portoroz will be organized for participants of the symposium, Tuesday, September 5, 1995 at 20 h 00. Works for a solo organ and for baritone and organ will be performed by internationally recognized Slovenian musicians.

Excursion

A half-day bus trip to the Postojna cave will be organized Wednesday, September 6, 1995. The Postojna cave is one of the largest and most readily accessible caverns in the world. An electric train takes the visitors to its deepest recesses. The dripstone-stalactites, stalagmites, columns, pillars and translucent curtains conjure up unforgettable images. The subterranean waters, which gouged out these galleries, are also the natural habitat of a singular dweller of the darkness, proteus anguinus.

On this trip a surprise is waiting for you.

Official dinner

The official dinner will be held Thursday 7, 1995 at 20 h 00 in Restaurant Taverna close to Hotel Metropol swimming pools. Departure from Hotel Bernardin at 19 h 45.
