* modelling of mercury in marine and terrestrial environments
* biomonitoring of radionuclides, trace metals and organometals
* characterization of Reference Materials.

Organic analytical chemistry:

* development of analytical and sample preparation techniques for determination of organic pollutants
* pollution control of petroleum hydrocarbons
* polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in terrestrial and aquatic environment and atmosphere
* in-situ biodegradation studies of PAHs and PCBs.

Inorganic analytical chemistry:

* analytical procedures for speciation of chromium and aluminium in the environmental samples
* transformation and mobility of chromium in the terrestrial environment
* the impact of aluminium in the terrestrial environment as a consequence of acid rain
* identification of emission sources of heavy metals in air, soil and water
* monitoring of aluminium and some other metals in dialysis fluid in haemodialysis centres in Slovena
* determinations of platinum and boron in carcinoma cells

Geochemistry:

* contamination of potable water with nitrates; modelling of geochemical processes; laboratory simulations
* stable isotopes (C, N, O, S) in studies of biogeochemical cycling of some organic compounds (e.g. biomarkers)
* isotopic and geochemical anomalies as indicators of past catastrophic events.

Environmental impact assessment:

* environmental protection
* organisation and co-ordination of projects
* expert advice and production of multidisciplinary assessment studies.

Centre for mass spectrometry:

* high resolution and high temperature mass spectrometry
